The IDO African Championship - Battle of the Giants All Styles Dance Sport Festival 2025 is hosted in the prestigious Superbowl at the luxurious Sun City Resort, North West Province, South Africa.

This year marks the introductory year of the IDO African Championship, and 33rd year of the Battle of the Giants event.​​

COMPETITION RULES​

The IDO African Championship Battle of the Giants will run as per the Rules & Regulations of the International Dance Organization relative to the styles on offer to enter.

AGE CATEGORIES

  • ​Dancers may only perform in a older age category so long as there is a maximum of 3-years to the minimum age of the category.

E.g. A 14 year old may dance in 17 and Over category.

  • Adult 2 sections - competitors may not be younger than the minimum age requirement of 31 years.

  • No competitors may dance in a lower age category than their current age.

General Rules

Dance Style:             Performances must be primarily AfroFusion, which is a fusion of African dance styles with contemporary dance                                       forms.

Music:                       Music must be predominantly Afrobeat or other African-inspired genres.

Costume:                  Costumes should reflect the spirit of AfroFusion and can incorporate traditional African elements or modern                                             fashion.

Props:                        Limited props may be used.

Time Limit:               Solo  1:30-2:00 minutes.

                                   Group  2:00-2:30 minutes

 

STREET DANCE

Format

Showcase Round:  Competitors will be grouped in heats of 3-4 competitors to do a 2x 30second showcase                                            performances.

Battle Round:          Competitors will battle 1-on-1 for 3x 40second rounds per competitor. 

 

Heat groups, and Battle’s will be determined by the number of competitors entered.

 

 

General Rules

Dance Style:             Performances must be primarily Afro styles, which incorporates dance styles under the umbrella of African street                                       dance styles ie. Sbhujwa, Pantsula, Punta, Mapouka, Bikutsi, Mapiko, Marrabenta, Bongo Flava (Taarab), Mbalax etc.

Music:                       Will be DJ’s choice, predominantly Afrobeat or other African-inspired genres.

Props:                        No props allowed.

General Rules

Dance Style:            Performances must be primarily street dance, which includes Afro Styles, Hip Hop, Breaking, Popping, Locking,                                         House, Waacking, Vogue, Krump, Dancehall etc.

Music:                      Music must be appropriate and as per competition rules and regulations.

Costume:                Costumes should reflect the image of the crew and/or performance and should be authentic to street dance                                                culture.

Props:                       No props may be used.

Time Limit:             2:00-2:30 minutes

AFRICAN SOLO CHAMPIONSHIP                                   

The Adult Solo Achiever, is our most decorated section of the event whereby competitors take part to win the title of the ultimate soloist in an improvisation showdown. With the transformation of our event, this section will be renamed to the “AFRICAN SOLO CHAMPION”, a prestigious title relevant to the event.

How it will work:

• Once competitors have won their respective categories within the BOTG competition, they will be required to confirm with the competition Supervisor at the event, whether they wish to participate in the AFRICAN SOLO CHAMPION section.

• Competitors will be split into heats to perform a 1 minute improvisation performance to a selected piece of music, the adjudicators will eliminate down to 8 competitors (entry dependent). 

• The 8 finalists will draw random numbers to determine the order of performance.

• Once finalists have drawn numbers, All finalists will have ONE chance to listen to the mixed production of music. Dancer #1 will have time to listen to the 1-minute mix one more time, prior to performing. All other finalists will be securely kept in our backstage soundproof room. While finalist #1 is performing, finalist #2 will be allowed out of the room and onto the stage, to sit facing the back of the stage, allowing their 1 minute to listen to the mix while the previous finalist is performing. This will continue until all finalists have performed.

• Judges will score in order of merit to decide our ultimate AFRICAN SOLO CHAMPION.

 

Rules:

• Only winners of the respective sections are eligible to participate in the AFRICAN SOLO CHAMPION.

• 2nd place is not eligible to participate should 1st place be unable/unwilling to participate.

• Should the same dancer win multiple solo sections across/within the disciplines, they will decide on which discipline they wish to represent. 2nd place will again, NOT replace the winner in this circumstance.

• Competitors are allowed variate out of their selected style in order to adapt to the music.

• Competitors are allowed to make use of handheld props with the exception of any powder, liquid, flammable and/or dangerous objects/materials.

• Competitors may not remove any items of clothing during a performance. 

​

Performance duration: 1:00 minute mix by DJ.

​

TIME LIMITS

​Please check the IDO Rules for time limits pertaining to the specific Age Groups, Sections and Dance Disciplines.

 
DANCE FLOOR

14m width x 11m length.

The dance floor will be divided in two for certain sections, where appropriate.

ADJUDICATING PANEL

A rotating panel of judges will adjudicate this event and will comprise of IDO licensed judges (from South Africa), International and special guest adjudicators.

Day Visitors:

  • Entrance to the Valley of the Waves is charged as per Sun City Resort pricing:​

  • Spectator and/or dancers armbands do not allow access to the Valley of the Waves.

Competitors:

  • Dance Studio Heads and Team Leader's will receive a accreditation to be presented at the main gate for competitor entrance. 

  • Dancers to report to the Lupata Room (Sun Central) for registration and to receive their IDO African Championship goodie bag containing accreditation and commemorative T-Shirt. 

Spectator ticket's can be purchased from the Lupata Room for via card payment ONLY. 

No international currency will be accepted. â€‹

There will be an official professional photographer on duty for much better quality action shots so keep your eyes glued on our stage and let our amazing team take care of those everlasting memories.

BATTLE OF THE GIANTS

We’re celebrating 33 years of Battle of the Giants All Styles Dance Sport Festival at Sun City this year!

​

This dance competition has been hosted at the prestigious Superbowl of the Sun City Resort since 1999 and has grown in both number of participants and dance schools, as well as the various styles of dance that are performed. 

​

The event has been the stepping stone for the careers of many of South Africa's top performing dancers, teachers, trainers, choreographers and judges.

​

The event has offered training scholarships to selected representatives to further enhance their careers. 

​

BOTG hosted many international guest judges over its years, and aims to keep connecting our event with international representation. 

Bev has played an instrumental role in hosting the IDO Commonwealth Cup and many other international events in conjunction with Sun International.
